Allowable Expenses

Families can use their ESA+ scholarship funds to pay for allowable education-related expenses.

How Allowable Expenses Work

The amount of funding you have available for allowable expenses depends on whether you enroll your student in a private school, a reimbursement school, or a home school.

Families who have funds available for allowable expenses can use those funds to pay for the following education-related expenses:

Tutors must be registered with SEAA to accept ESA+ funds. Tutoring must be related to one of the following academic subjects: math, science, English/language arts, social studies, or foreign languages.

Type: Service

Providers of educational therapy, such as speech therapy and occupational therapy, must be registered with SEAA to accept ESA+ funds.

Type: Service

Curricular materials are learning resources used to teach a particular subject. These are things such as lesson plans, learning kits, or workbooks that supplement an academic subject.

Type: Product

Educational technology must be used for educational purposes and be related to one of the following categories: vision, hearing, speech communication, learning/cognition/development, computers and related, miscellaneous.

Type: Product

ESA+ funds may be used for transportation services to/from educational services/activities. Visit the Search for a Provider portal and enter the search term “transportation” to see a list of enrolled providers.

Type: Service

Typically used by home school students; Direct Payment Schools are responsible for required testing.

Type: Product

Must be required by a nonpublic school and related to one of the following academic subjects: math, science, English/language arts, social studies, or foreign languages.

Non-allowable Expenses*

ESA+ scholarship funds may not be used for certain items, including:

Consumable educational supplies such as paper or printer ink, household items such as cleaning supplies, field trips, tickets to events, membership to organizations, out of state in-person services, sports equipment, furnishings such as a desk or chair, musical instruments.
